Washing sweaters in glycerin or vinegar can help to remove the itchiness from sweaters. Another option is to apply hair conditioner to the sweater to soften it.
To wash a sweater using glycerin, simply add 2 to 3 tablespoons of it to a tub of water and hand wash the garment. To soften a sweater using vinegar, add 2 to 3 cups of white distilled vinegar to the water after the washing machine fills and wash the garment as usual.
To wash a sweater with the aid of hair conditioner, fill a tub with water and thoroughly soak the garment. Let the water out of the tub and gently press the excess water from the sweater. A sweater made of wool should not be rung out because this stretches the clothing and ruins its shape. While the sweater is still damp, liberally apply the conditioner and work it through the material. Conditioners of higher quality work better than cheaper brands, and make sure that it is not a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner mix. Leave the conditioner on the sweater for approximately half an hour to a full hour. Lay the sweater out flat so that it can finish drying completely. Do not wash the conditioner out of the sweater.
