To soak off old gel polish at home, first roughen the tops of your nails with the coarse side of a nail file to remove the top coat. This will enable the remover to soak into the polish below. Next, soak a cotton ball with 100 percent acetone polish remover, and place it on a fingernail. Wrap a strip of aluminum foil around the top of your finger to hold the cotton ball in place on the nail. Repeat until all five fingers on one hand are covered, and then let the acetone soak in for 10-15 minutes.

After this waiting period, use your free hand to unwrap one finger and gently start working the polish off the nail with an orange stick. It should come off fairly easily. Don't scrape too hard, or you risk losing the top layer of your fingernail. After scraping the polish off, use a buffing block on each nail to smooth the surface and to remove any last remaining bits of gel polish. Wash your hands with warm soapy water, and apply a moisturizer to your hands, nails and cuticles.
