To get rid of nail fungus quickly at home, use a combination of over-the-counter antifungal treatments and chest vapor rubs, thin your nails, and trim them. These processes usually eliminate fungal infections in the nails so that there is no need to obtain a prescription.
- Apply antifungal ointments and creams to your nails
File away any white spots on the nail surface, then soak the nails in water. Dry them with a clean cloth or paper towel before applying antifungal lotion or cream that's designed for nails. Be sure to follow the directions on the container.
- Put vapor rub on the nails
Apply some vapor rub to a cotton swab, and dab the ointment onto the nails. Repeat this process daily. The active ingredients typically lead to improvements in fungus symptoms.
- Thin and trim your nails
Rub urea cream onto the affected nails, wrap a bandage around them, and leave this in place overnight. Wash off the urea cream with warm water and soap in the morning, repeating daily until the nails are softer. Use petroleum jelly to shield the skin around the nails. Trim the nails once they are softer, and use a file to thin them, as thinning and trimming reduce the pressure on the nails and reduce the pain.
