There are no universal certification rules preventing registered nurses from having tattoos. However, many individual nursing schools and employers have dress code regulations preventing visible tattoos and asking nurses to cover tattooed skin.
The issue of tattoos in the workplace is generally considered to be an issue of professionalism rather than a health issue, even in health care fields. Many clinics and nursing schools cite the need for nurses and other medical professionals to present a professional image. This can include the need to develop a rapport with older or more socially conservative clients who are uncomfortable with tattoos. However, tattoos on the stomach, back, upper arm or other locations covered by surgical scrubs would be invisible to patients and therefore acceptable.
