An easy way to remove red tones from brown hair is to use a blue shampoo and a color-depositing ash rinse. This 30-minute procedure requires a hairbrush, blue shampoo, color-depositing ash rinse, a shower cap, latex gloves, a towel and shower access.
- Brush your hair
Brush your hair thoroughly, and put on latex gloves.
- Wash your hair with blue shampoo
Wash your hair with warm water and a blue shampoo. Work the shampoo into a lather, and let it sit on your hair for two minutes. Rinse with cool water. To prevent bathtub stains, make sure that there are no lingering shampoo droplets on it.
- Apply a color-depositing ash rinse
Apply a color-depositing ash rinse in lieu of your regular conditioner. Saturate your hair with the rinse, gather your hair, and cover it with a shower cap. Leave the rinse on your hair for three minutes, and then rinse with cool water. Remove and discard your latex gloves. Turn the shower cap inside out, rinse it, and store it.
- Examine the results
If you are satisfied with your hair color, maintain it by repeating this process once a week. For more drastic results, leave the ash rinse on your hair for up to 30 minutes at a time.
