To grow a goatee, trim facial hair to between 1/8 of an inch and 13/64 of an inch and then shave around the outside of the goatee's desired shape. Finally, trim hair away from the lower lip.
When trimming the hair away below the lower lip, the exposed skin should end up in a triangular shape, with the tip of the triangle pointed down toward the tip of the chin. The cheeks and neck should be clean-shaven when wearing a goatee. As the goatee grows and fills in, using clippers set to the desired length is the easiest way to maintain an even length. However, different effects can be created by cutting different areas of the goatee to different lengths.
