While the exact recipe for organic hair dye depends on the target color, to make organic hair dye at home, chop up an herbal material, mix it with hot water to make a paste, apply to the hair, process and rinse out. Making organic hair dye takes roughly 30 minutes plus processing time and requires hot water and herbs or tea.
- Choose the correct herbs
Sage and rosemary covers gray hair. Calendula, chamomile and lemon peel brighten blond hair. Marigold creates red hair. A mix of walnut shells, black tea and cherry tree bark makes brown hair show rich tones.
- Prepare the materials
The herbal materials need to be mashed or chopped until fine enough to form a paste when mixed with water. In the case of walnut shells and cherry tree bark, grind them into a fine powder.
- Make a tea or a paste
If using black tea, steep the tea in hot water, and wait until it cools off before removing the tea bag. Otherwise, heat water until it is hot but not boiling. Mix the desired herbs in a bowl, and add the hot water a little at a time until you have a thick paste.
- Apply the dye and process
Squirt the tea directly onto the hair. Otherwise, segment the hair, and apply the paste evenly over each strand. Process under a shower cap for 30 minutes, and rinse out with cool water.
