To make homemade temporary hair dye, brew teas using colorful substances such as turmeric, coffee, tea or beets and apply it to hair. Experiment with different substances to create different colors.
Coffee and tea are good ingredients for making brown dyes. Turmeric, chamomile and lemon juice can spruce up blond hair. Beets can create funky pink dyes or add a hint of magenta to other dyes.
To brew and use a homemade temporary hair dye tea, use the following steps.
- Blend the ingredients
- Add water
- Strain the tea
- Apply the dye
Blend 1 teaspoon to several tablespoons of herbs or plant material. Higher amounts create more intense colors. For example, a light tea with a smaller amount of turmeric creates a light wheat-colored dye, whereas a thicker paste made of turmeric creates a bold yellow.
Add around 1 cup of boiling water to create the tea. Let the mixture steep and cool before applying.
Strain the solids from the tea before applying.
It is best to apply the dye over a sink, as the mixture is usually runny. Leave the dye in for 1 hour and then rinse.
Some natural dyes can react with the chemicals in hair color, so it is a good idea to check with a hairdresser before using homemade dyes. Shampoo washes most dyes away in one wash; however, strongly colored substances such as turmeric and beets may stain blonde or lightened hair.
