A bun is best created with hair that has not been freshly washed. Brush the hair thoroughly to remove any tangles.
Use a hair brush to gather the hair into a ponytail high on the head. Smooth any bumps with the brush, and secure with an elastic hair tie. Brush out the ponytail to remove any new tangles that might have formed.
Grab the ponytail just below the elastic, and begin to twist the hair. While twisting the hair, wrap the ponytail around its base to create the bun.
While holding the bun in one hand, use the other to secure the bun with bobby pins. Go around the bun using as many pins as needed. An alternative for those uncomfortable using bobby pins, wrap another elastic holder twice around the bun, which frees up both hands to place the pins.
Once the bun has been pinned, spray the head with hairspray to further secure and strengthen the hairstyle.
