To lighten hair that has been dyed too dark a color, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo, add a lightener to your hair, wash it out, and condition your hair. If your hair is not the desired color, repeat the process.
- Wash your hair
Whether your hair was colored by a stylist or at home, the first thing you must do is wash it with a clarifying shampoo. Shampoo and rinse your hair at least twice. The shampoo causes any type of hair color to fade. If your hair is only slightly darker than you like, this could be the only necessary step.
- Apply hair lightener
Purchase a lightener that is meant for your hair color. Most identify themselves as hair color removers, but this does not mean that they return your hair to its natural color. Perform a strand test to ensure that the lightener produces the proper color. If it produces the color you want, follow the directions for the rest of your hair.
- Rinse out the lightener
Thoroughly rinse out the lightener in the shower or sink.
- Condition your hair
Once the lightener is completely out of your hair, condition it for at least 10 minutes.
