Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, was born in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father was an accomplished brew master, and his mother stayed at home and raised him and his two sisters. At age 18, Dr. Seuss began attending Dartmouth College and acted as the editor-in-chief of the school's humor magazine. He later lost his position on the magazine staff due to violating Prohibition law, but he continued to publish in the magazine under the pseudonym "Seuss."
After graduating from college, Dr. Seuss decided to pursue a career as a cartoonist and eventually as an illustrator of children's books. In 1937, he published his first book, "And to Think That I Saw it On Mulberry Street," under his pseudonym. Before his death in 1991, Dr. Seuss published more than 60 books. He won two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, the Pulitzer Prize, and a Peabody aware. As of 2015, his works have been the inspiration of 11 children's television programs, a major motion picture, and a Broadway musical.
