The benefits of using vinegar in hair include the removal of product buildup and dry scaly skin. Using a vinegar rinse throughout the hair helps to reduce excess oils and keeps hair shiny and smooth. Vinegar is also used to restore natural pH and helps prevent an itchy scalp.
Product buildup creates a residue that begins to coat each strand and create the appearance of dull and lifeless hair. Washing or rinsing weekly with a vinegar solution removes residue from each individual hair shaft and keeps cuticles closed so that hair stays healthy, smooth and shiny. When the cuticles remain closed, hair is able to slide more easily and tangles and knots are reduced.
A simple vinegar hair rinse can be made by combining 1/4 cup to 1 whole cup of apple cider vinegar with 16 ounces of water. This vinegar solution is used on hair after it has been shampooed and rinsed. To use the hair rinse, an individual massages the apple cider solution into the hair and scalp, making sure to focus on the ends in particular. The rinse is left on for a few minutes before rinsing the mixture out. Using vinegar on the hair daily can cause dryness. Twice a week is the limit for healthy hair.
