Using extra virgin olive oil in hair reduces dandruff, tames frizz, increases softness and manageability, and boosts shine. Extra virgin olive oil also helps reduce the negative effects of harsh chemicals in styling products and hair dyes.
Extra virgin olive oil is made up of thick fatty acids that, when applied to hair, coat the hair strands. This coating of fatty acids helps protect hair from damage associated with heat styling.
The fatty acids also smooth rough edges and split ends, making hair appear smooth. Extra virgin olive oil is especially effective in dry, cold climates when hair turns brittle and dry. These fatty acids add moisture to dry strands to give hair a healthy luster.
To apply extra virgin olive oil to hair, start by brushing the tangles out of unwashed hair. Be sure to wear unwanted or old clothes as they get splattered with oil. Pour 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil in a bowl, and microwave it for about 30 seconds or until it's just warm.
Then, massage the warm olive oil into the scalp using your fingertips. Dip a comb into the remaining olive oil, and drag it through the hair. Soak the hair and scalp for 30 minutes, rinse, and wash.
