Effective acne treatments for men and anyone suffering from acne include using exfoliating skin cleansers containing glycolic acid or peroxide, according to WebMD. These types of over-the-counter treatments can help peel away dead skin and prevent acne from forming.
Christopher B. Harmon, M.D., of Total Skin and Beauty Dermatology Center in Birmingham, Ala., says that many non-prescription treatments are helpful in fighting acne. Certain ingredients found in lotions, creams and acne treatment pads can thoroughly exfoliate the skin and help prevent the growth of bacteria. Such ingredients include salicyclic acid and benzoyl peroxide. The relief these products offer, however, may only be temporary unless they are used on a daily basis, according to Dr. Harmon.
For stronger treatments, Dr. Harmon recommends getting a prescription from a health care professional. Prescription medications may include antibiotics that can be taken orally or used as a lotion, retinoids and anti-inflammatory medications that doctors can inject directly into the skin to ease severe outbreaks of acne or other types of skin rashes.
Dermatologist Jeffrey Dover, M.D. notes about one-third of men who take anabolic steroids develop acne that is resistant to conventional treatment. The acne gradually vanishes once the use of anabolic steroids ceases.
