What Is the Smallest Dog Breed in the World?

Affenpinschers, Chihuahuas, Pekingeses and Papillions are some of the smallest dog breeds in the world. They all are bred to be indoor dogs.

Small dog breeds make great companions. They are loyal and prefer to be in their owners' laps for the majority of the day. Affenpinschers are one of the oldest toy breeds according to the American Kennel Club. They were first bred in England. Standing at only 9.5 to 11.5 inches tall, they were bred to hunt rats. Chihuahuas are also a small breed. First bred in Mexico, these little dogs weigh only 3 to 6 pounds when fully grown.
