Some popular boiled cabbage recipes are buttered cabbage and boiled cabbage with bacon. Another classic boiled cabbage dish is corned beef and cabbage, an Irish classic.
To make corned beef and cabbage, place 3 pounds of corned beef brisket in a large pot. Add the spice packet that comes with the meat, a sprinkle of thyme and a bay leaf, then cover the beef with water. Bring the water to a boil before reducing the heat and simmering for up to three hours. Add 1 chopped rutabaga, 10 chopped red potatoes and 5 chopped carrots to the pot, and simmer until the vegetables are almost cooked through. Add 1 head of cut cabbage, and cook for 15 more minutes. Remove the meat and vegetables, add 1 stick of butter to the broth, and spoon the sauce over the meat and vegetables.
To make a quick and popular boiled cabbage recipe, cook 4 to 6 diced bacon slices in a pan, and remove before they turn crispy. In the bacon fat, cook 1 chopped sweet onion for four to five minutes. Add 1 head of chopped cabbage and 1 cup of chicken broth to the pot, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, and simmer for 15 minutes, adding more broth if necessary. Once the cabbage is tender, add the bacon, and serve.
