As of 2015, online play therapy courses can be found through Capella.edu and include Play Therapy 1: The History and Systems of Play Therapy, Play Therapy 2: Theories and Practices of Play Therapy, Filial Play Therapy, Play Therapy Supervision Practices and Applications of Play Therapy, notes Capella.edu. These courses are five quarter credits and are taken as part of a post-baccalaureate certificate in play therapy.
Mental health professionals use play therapy as part of their patient support programs and must have a clinical license. Students who want to become a registered play therapist through the Association for Play Therapy typically must complete supervised clinical hours in additional to their online courses, notes Capella.edu.
Online play therapy courses are also available through the post-master's certificate in play therapy program at Monmouth University. This certificate offers a combination of online and hybrid courses, which include some weekend time on-campus. Courses include Play Therapy for Children at Risk, Advanced Techniques in Play Therapy, Advanced Theory in Play Therapy, Advanced Clinical Practice with Children, Play Therapy Practicum Seminar I and Play Therapy Practicum Seminar II.
Prospective play therapy students who are interested in online courses can search for the Association for Play Therapy online directory for a complete list of approved centers and universities.
