Universities in the United Kingdom do not offer free master’s degree programs; however, there is a variety of scholarships available for exceptional students that cover both tuition fees and living costs. Among those are Chevening Scholarships, Rhodes Scholarships at University of Oxford and Gates Cambridge Scholarships. Universities list the financial aid and scholarships available on their websites, but it is also advisable to get in direct contact with their admissions office for more specific information about individual student’s options.
Chevening Scholarships are awarded by the UK government to outstanding scholars from all around the world who wish to pursue their postgraduate studies in the country. They are available for all subjects of study and include tuition fees and a living allowance.
Gates Cambridge Scholarships are full-cost awards available to postgraduate and research students at the University of Cambridge. Similarly, the Rhodes Scholarships provide full financial support to 83 students accepted to a postgraduate program at the University of Oxford.
Outside of individual universities, many private organizations and foundations offer their own scholarships. Additional support in the form of grants, bursaries or hardship funds is also available for students meeting the criteria.
It is advisable to apply for several scholarships as soon as you enter the admission process or even beforehand because many universities require a preliminary funding plan to be included in their application forms.
