This recipe from Tastebook.com is modeled after Steak 'n Shake's Frisco Melt and contains thousand island dressing, ketchup, beef, sourdough bread, two types of cheese and condiments. Butter is used to sauté onions to put on top.
In order to make four sandwiches, begin by combining 2 tablespoons of thousand island dressing and 1 tablespoon of ketchup. Set it aside.
Using 1 pound of ground beef, form 8 thin patties, and fry them in a pan or on a griddle. Meanwhile, toast 8 slices of sourdough bread.
Melt 1/2 tablespoon of butter in a pan, and add 2 tablespoons of chopped onion to the pan. Cook until the onions are softened. Without cleaning out the pan, place 1 or 2 slices of bread into the pan, allowing each slide to crisp up. Keep adding the butter and bread until all pieces have been through the pan.
To assemble the sandwiches, place one slide of bread on a plate. Top it with 1 slice of American cheese, 1 beef patty, 1 slice of Swiss cheese, another patty and grilled onions. Finally, put an optional slice of tomato and a piece of lettuce on top, spread the dressing over the sandwich and place the other slice of toasted bread on top.
