Brainstorming is a helpful pre-writing exercise whether one is writing a paper for English class or a business paper for presentation. Brainstorming involves spontaneous generation of ideas about a particular topic for the purpose of gathering information and creating concepts.
Brainstorming is best accomplished with a group. In preparation for writing a paper of any sort, the writer assembles a group to float ideas and stir creative juices. Those in the group need to be spontaneous, open and uninhibited about sharing concepts. Ideas are jotted down and discussed, preferably from a number of angles. Once the brainstorming session or sessions end, the writer organizes and pulls together the different approaches for construction of a rough draft.
