What Foods Should Those With Gout Avoid?

Patients with gout are advised to avoid high-purine foods, such as meat, poultry and fish, according to Mayo Clinic. Foods to avoid include choices with saturated fat, alcohol and high-fructose corn syrup because these substances increase uric acid in the body. Mayo Clinic recommends patients avoid foods with refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, candy and cakes.

The Arthritis Foundation explains high-purine foods raise uric acid levels. Excess uric acid produces crystals that build up in soft tissues to cause gout. High-purine foods to eliminate completely include all types of alcoholic beverages, anchovies, sardines, herring, trout, haddock, mussels, scallops, codfish, bacon, turkey, veal, venison, liver and organ meats.

Gout patients are advised to avoid foods with high-fructose corn syrup, such as soft drinks and juice drinks because high-fructose corn syrup increases uric acid in the body. Mayo Clinic states foods high in saturated fats lower the body's ability to eliminate uric acid. Eating 4 to 6 ounces of meat daily is recommended for those who have gout, and they should try vegetable sources of protein including beans, legumes and fat-free dairy products.

Patients can eat some meats with moderate purine levels to determine how the body responds to elevated uric acid levels. The Arthritis Foundation reveals patients may consume reduced amounts of moderate-purine foods, such as beef, chicken, duck, pork, ham, crab, lobster, oysters and shrimp.

The best way to treat gout is with medications to fight high uric acid levels and inflammation, according to the Arthritis Foundation. The organization explains dietary limitations for gout patients are too restrictive and provide few benefits.
