To make a basic barbecue sauce, combine 1 1/2 cups ketchup, 1/2 cup dark brown sugar, 3 chopped cloves of garlic, 3 tablespoons cider vinegar and 3 tablespoons Worcestershire in a saucepan. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons paprika, 3/4 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon celery salt and 1/2 cup water. Bring to a boil, and then reduce heat to low. Cook for 30 to 40 minutes or until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
Alternatively, make barbecue sauce by combining 1/2 cup ketchup, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire, 1 tablespoon cider vinegar, 1 dash hot sauce, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon mustard powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer, and then remove from the heat and use as desired.
To make a homemade barbecue sauce that's sweetened with molasses, begin by heating 1 tablespoon canola oil in a saucepan. Add 1/2 a diced onion and 2 minced cloves of garlic and saute for 5 minutes. Add 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/3 cup molasses, 1/3 cup brown sugar, 4 tablespoons distilled vinegar and 4 tablespoons minced chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. Stir in 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce and a dash of salt. Simmer for 20 minutes, and remove from heat.
