MacDill Air Force Base is located approximately 4 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida. It was built in 1941, prior to the United States' entry into World War 2. It is named after Colonel Leslie MacDill, a World War I aviator who died in a crash in 1938.
MacDill is home to the 6th Air Mobility Wing, the headquarters for the United States Central Command, headquarters for the United States Special Operations Command, the United States Marine Corps Forces Central Command, and United States Special Operations Command Central.
