Since beginning the series, author J.D. Robb has published two books per year in the "In Death" series with the exception of 1998. The series began in 1995 with "Naked in Death" and "Glory in Death." As of 2015, the series contains 41 books with more in the works. In addition to the novels, Robb has published several novellas and short stories featuring the same characters.
J.D. Robb is the pseudonym of author Nora Roberts. Wanting to branch out her writing career, Roberts selected the pen name to reach a new audience. Roberts was not revealed as the author until the 12th book of the "In Death" series. When Roberts' identity was revealed, fans of her other books picked up the J.D. Robb books, and the "In Death" series skyrocketed in sales. Since the ninth book, "Loyalty in Death," every book of the series has made the New York Times bestseller list.
Taking place in the future, the series follows the homicide detective Eve Dallas and her Irish billionaire lover, Roarke. Eve was found in an alley with no memory when she was 8 years old, and part of the series focuses on her efforts to regain her memory and discover her past.
