"Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen was published by Bradbury Press in 1987 and named a Newbery Honor Book for 1988. A 20th anniversary edition of "Hatchet" was released in 2007.
"Hatchet" is followed by four sequels: "The River," "Brian's Winter," "Brian's Return" and "Brian's Hunt." Collectively, the series is known as "Brian's Saga." The final entry in the series, "Brian's Hunt," was published by Random House in 2003. Alternately titled "Hatchet: Winter," the third "Brian's Saga" book, "Brian's Winter," functions as an alternate ending to "Hatchet" and takes place second in the in-universe chronology.
