"Story of O" was written by French author Anne Desclos under the pen name Pauline Réage. The book was published in 1954, but she didn't reveal herself as the author until 40 years later. Desclos said the book was a series of love letters to her lover Jean Paulhan.
"Story of O" is an erotic novel that follows the character "O," a Parisian fashion photographer who wants to prove her devotion to her lover, Rene, through submission to him and all of his desires. The book won the French literature prize Prix des Deux Magots in 1955. Obscenity charges were brought against the publisher, but the courts rejected the charges. There was a publicity ban for many years. A sequel called "Retour à Roissy," translated to "Return to the Chateau," was published in 1969, but the author is unknown.
