Designer Anya Ayoung-Chee won the ninth season of “Project Runway,” which aired in 2011. A dual citizen of both the United States and Trinidad and Tobago, Ayoung-Chee won the competition in spite of limited fashion design experience.
Ayoung-Chee learned to sew just four months before auditioning for “Project Runway.” Also trained as a graphic designer, she specialized in spotting prints that drew inspiration from her design work. Despite her lack of experience, Ayong-Chee’s designs brought her to the final rounds of the competition, where she was eventually awarded the grand prize of a fashion spread in “Marie Claire” and $100,000 to start her own line. In addition to her work as a fashion designer and acclaim as a “Project Runway” winner, Ayoung-Chee also competed in the Miss Universe pageant in 2008.
