Maci Peterson won the KFVS12 Women Startup Challenge's top prize of $50,000 for her text messaging app On Second Thought. Michelle Salsberry came in second with her financial management app Fam-ess, while Holly Epstein Ojalvo and Lisa Vehrenkamp took third place with digital news company Kicker. KFVS12 announced the winners of its inaugural Women Startup Challenge on July 2, 2015.
The winner, On Second Thought, is a mobile app that enables users to retrieve text messages before the recipient gets them, eliminating the awkward moments that arise from inappropriate text messages. Fam-ess, which took second place, is an app intended to teach kids to save the little money they earn so as to develop financial discipline. Kicker is a digital news company whose functionality enabled it to scoop third place.
The Women Startup Challenge was launched to showcase technology start-ups initiated by women and to source for funds. The winners received cash and other prizes, including consultation with startup partners and free legal services. From more than 180 participants, the eventual winners were selected after a series of rounds involving fundraising and judging. According to KFVS12.com, the inaugural contest was a huge success, paving the way for greater investment in women's skills and innovation.
