Wind mitigation refers to building techniques designed to prevent wind damage. In areas where powerful thunderstorms or tropical cyclones are common, wind mitigation can lead to lower home insurance prices and a better chance of avoiding damage during storms.
Much of wind mitigation has to do with the parts used to build the structure. Thicker bolts and larger pieces of wood, for example, lead to a home's ability to better withstand a powerful storm. The connections throughout a home have a major impact as well. Roofs, in particular, are especially vulnerable. Reinforcing the roof to the home makes it more likely to stay attached.
