"The Last Mountain Man" book series by William W. Johnstone chronicles the adventures of frontiersman Smoke Jensen as he avenges the destruction of his family. As of 2015, the series consists of 43 books and spans the whole of Smoke Jensen's life.
"The Last Mountain Man," published in 1984 by Zebra Historical, was the title of the first book in the series. "Return of the Mountain Man," "Trail of the Mountain Man," "Revenge of the Mountain Man" and "Journey of the Mountain Man" followed over the next several years.
The genre is Western, and the series' settings range from mid-19th century Missouri and the Ozark Mountains to various landscapes throughout the Old Western frontier. In "Trail of the Mountain Man," a mini gold rush in Colorado finds Smoke Jensen confronting homicidal upstarts.
Smoke Jensen is usually on the right side of the law but occasionally exchanges bullets with uniformed men. In "Trek of the Mountain Man," he evades a Texas Bounty hunter intent on killing him in exchange for a large reward.
"The Last Mountain Man" books are a continuation of "The First Mountain Man" series, which told the stories of Preacher, the mountain man who subsequently took Smoke Jensen under his wing. William W. Johnstone died before completing the later books featuring Smoke Jensen, but his nephew, J.A. Johnstone, finished the series and continues to add new titles.
