Some of the most popular movies of 2014 were "Transformers: Age of Extinction," "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1." These filmed were the highest-grossing films worldwide in 2014, according to Box Office Mojo.
Based on earnings, it appears that high-action films, with the exception of "Maleficent," were the most popular films to see in 2014, worldwide. Other popular action movies in the top 10 of the highest grossing films include "X-Men: Days of Future Past," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "The Amazing Spiderman 2" and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes." Interestingly enough, although "Transformers: Age of Extinction" earned the most at the box office worldwide, it received the most bad reviews of any of the top 10 films of the year.
Some of the other most popular films of 2014 were biographical war drama "American Sniper," science-fiction film "Interstellar" and kid-friendly flicks, including "The Lego Movie," "Big Hero 6" and "How to Train Your Dragon 2." What movies were most popular around the world differed somewhat from what was most popular in the United States. "American Sniper," for instance, was only the 13th highest-grossing film worldwide in 2014, but was actually the highest grossing film in the United States, per Box Office Mojo.
