The main cast members of "Gunsmoke" are James Arness, Milburn Stone, Amanda Blake, Ken Curtis and Dennis Weaver. Other cast members include Glenn Strange, Buck Taylor and Bert Madrid.
James Arness, born as James King Aurness, played the role of Marshall Matt Dillon on the television series, "Gunsmoke." Arness worked as a radio announcer in Minneapolis before hitchhiking his way to Hollywood. His first movie role was in the film "The Farmer's Daughter." Arness became good friends with John Wayne, who suggested Arness for the role of Dillon: a role that brought Arness world-wide fame.
"Milburn Stone" was a character actor who played the role of Doc Adams on "Gunsmoke." He was the nephew of famous Broadway comedian Jeff Stone. Milburn also had a small role on Broadway before making his way to Los Angeles to act in films. In between an abundance of unbilled work, he landed a few lead movie roles, including the heroic lead in "Federal Bullets" and "The Great Alaskan Mystery."
"Gunsmoke" first aired in 1965 and ran for a total of 20 years. Upon its finale in 1975, it ended as the longest running prime time drama series in U.S. television history. In 2010, the final season of "Law and Order" tied its record.
