Louise Penny was born in Toronto in 1958. Her first career was as a hard news and current affairs radio host for the Canadian Broadcast Company in Toronto. She married her husband Michael, the head of hematology at the Montreal Children's Hospital, when she was in her mid-thirties. As of 2015, she lives in a brick home outside a small village south of Montreal.
