The show features Brenneman as a divorced New York lawyer who moves to Connecticut with her daughter and becomes a judge. The show's premise is based on the experiences of Brenneman's own mother. Brenneman won a People's Choice Award and was nominated for three Emmy Awards for her work on the show, which ran for 130 episodes. She has also appeared in the movies "Heat," "Your Friends and Neighbors," "Bye Bye, Love" and "The Suburbans," as well as the television shows "NYPD Blue" and "Private Practice."
Tyne Daly has had a long acting career and is probably best known for her starring role in the 1980s television show "Cagney and Lacey," in which she played police detective Mary Ann Lacey. She won four Emmy Awards for the role. She went on to win a Tony Award for her work on Broadway portraying Mama Rose in a production of "Gypsy." On "Judging Amy," she played the overbearing mother of Brenneman's character.
