The plot of "Parenthood" focuses on the different generations of the Buckman family. Gil Buckman, played by Steve Martin, is married to Karen Buckman, played by Mary Steenburgen. The couple have three children: Kevin, Taylor and Justin, played by Jasen Fisher, Alisan Porter and Zachary La Voy, respectively. Gil's father, Frank, played by Jason Robards, is the family patriarch. Though Gil comes to Frank for advice, Frank is more fond of his other son, Larry, played by Tom Hulce.
Dianne Wiest plays Gil's sister, Helen. Helen has two children, Garry and Julie, played by Joaquin Phoenix and Martha Plimpton, respectively. Though Julie does well in school, she prefers to spend time with her boyfriend, Tod, played by Keanu Reeves. Susan, the last of Frank's children, is played by Harley Kozak. Susan is married to Nathan, played by Rick Moranis, and the couple have a daughter, Patty, played by Ivyann Schwan.
