The 2014 drama film “Difret” won awards at the Sundance Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival. Zeresenay Berhane Mehari directed the movie, and Angelina Jolie was the executive producer. It was Ethiopia’s official entry to the 87th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not nominated. The movie is about a court case that resulted in the outlawing of child bride kidnapping in Ethiopia.
The 2015 drama film “Lamb” was Ethiopia’s official entry to the 88th Academy Awards, but failed to make the final list. Yared Zeleke directed the movie. The movie revolves around the story of a boy who tries to save his sheep from sacrifice for a religious fest. The boy decides to take his sheep and travel to the top of a mountain. Rediat Amare plays the lead character in the movie. Kidist Siyum, Welela Assefa, Surafel Teka, Rahel Teshome and Indris Mohamed play other prominent character in the film.
“Atletu” or “The Athlete” is a 2009 biographical drama film about marathon runner Abebe Bikila. Bikila ran barefoot in the Rome Olympic Games in 1960 and won the gold medal. He was a complete unknown before he won the gold medal. Rasselas Lakew and Davey Frankel directed the movie, and Lakew also played the lead role of Abebe Bikila.
