Full Answer

In order to vote, viewers must be 18 years of age or older and from the United States. Phone voting starts during the show and continues until 60 minutes after the conclusion. Online voting, both on ABC.com and on Facebook, opens at the beginning of the show on the east coast and stays open until 8 p.m. the next day. The show usually extends the online voting time to 11 p.m. during the last three weeks of the season. To tally the votes, the show combines them with the scores assigned to the teams by the judges, and the following week the contestants with the lowest combination of scores and votes must leave the show.

In order to vote online, a viewer needs a user name and a valid email address in order to sign up for an ABC account. The network also offers the option of signing in with an existing Facebook account, which stays connected to an ABC account to allow voting on subsequent performances.
