VKontakte, or VK, is considered Europe's largest social networking website with over 100 million users. It is most popular in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russian and the Ukraine. VK's popularity has made it the fourth-most visited site in Russia.
Similar to Facebook, VK users are able to meet new people or message their friends and family either privately or publicly, share videos and images, play games, and create groups and public pages. VK was launched in October 2006, and at the time was limited to university students, similar to how Facebook started. It wasn't until 2011 that invitations were no longer required, and it became open to the public. The users of VKontakte are mostly young men and women between 18 and 24 years of age.
