What Is the Virgin River Series?

The Virgin River series by Robyn Carr is a series of novels and novellas set in the fictional small town of Virgin River in northern California. As of 2013, there are 18 books in the Virgin River series and two more short works that appeared in anthologies.

Although major and minor characters reappear from time to time, each story focuses on different main characters. The stories center around broken and needy people coming to Virgin River and finding romance. For instance, the first novel, "Virgin River," concerns a young nurse named Melinda Munroe who comes to Virgin River to assist the local doctor after the murder of her husband. After realizing her rent-free cabin is a dilapidated dump, she decides to leave, but then begins to care for an abandoned baby. A romance develops between Melinda and a retired marine named Jack Sheridan.

Robyn Carr studied nursing in college, but because her husband was in the U.S. Air Force and moved around so often, she was unable to sustain a career in medicine. Instead, she began to write historical and contemporary romance novels and other works. She has published several series of romances and a number of stand-alone novels. Many of her novels, including several titles in the Virgin River series, have made the New York Times bestseller list.
