What Was Vincent Van Gogh Famous For?

Vincent van Gogh was famous for his paintings that inspired the styles of Symbolism, Fauvism and Expressionism, but he is also well known for the mental health issues he had over the 37 years of his life. The artist, though short lived, was able to complete some 2,100 pieces of art, of which 860 were oil paintings and 1,300 were watercolors.

Van Gogh suffered multiple mental breakdowns over the years, including the one that resulted in him cutting off his own ear after an argument with Paul Gauguin, who was hired by Vincent's brother, Theo, to watch over him. It was a little over 2 years later that he shot himself. He appeared to make a recovery and went home from the hospital 2 days later. However, he died at home with his brother, despite his improved appearance.
