ABS-CBN is a commercial television network in the Philippines with programming that includes reality shows, talk shows, news reporting, sitcoms and dramas. The majority of its programs are produced within the network, with some dramas made by other studios.
ABS-CBN creates the majority of it's content, following the models pioneered by major American television networks. Many of its shows, such as Kris TV and Umagag Kay Ganda, follow the talk show or variety show format. They include one or several hosts that discuss various current events and feature a variety of special guests. These programs also contain musical performances by local and international artists. This type of programming has a lower production cost than that of a scripted series, making it easier to produce and more profitable for the network. Many of the scripted dramas and animated features the network airs are syndicated from other studios or countries.
ABS-CBN stands for Alto Broadcasting System-Chronicle Broadcasting Network. It is the oldest television network in the country and the most successful. In 2012, it reported advertising revenue of 19 billion Philippine pesos. The network first began broadcasting on October 23, 1953, as the Alto Broadcasting System, making it one of the first commercial networks in Asia.
