Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?" is about four couples, all of whom are having conflicting feelings about the state of their marriages. The film is based on Perry's stage play of the same name.
"Why Did I Get Married?" focuses on four couples, all of whom are friends, as they drive to the mountains for a weeklong retreat together. One character is named Terry, played by Tyler Perry, and is married to Dianne, played by Sharon Leal. Their marriage is suffering because Dianne is too focused on work, causing her marriage to suffer. The second couple consists of Angela and Marcus, played by Tasha Smith and Michael Jai White, respectively, who are going through marital problems due to Angela's temper.
The third couple, Sheila and Mike, played by Jill Scott and Richard T. Jones, respectively, are having problems because of Sheila's weight. After Sheila proves too heavy to fit in one seat on a plane, Mike leaves with Trina, Sheila's friend. The last couple, Patricia and Gavin, played by Janet Jackson and Malik Yoba, have an argument after Patricia gives a presentation on her new book. A sequel, "Why Did I Get Married Too?," starring many of the same characters, was released in 2010.
