Some Indian language TV stations include Star Utsav, DD Chandana, DD Malayalam, 5aab TV and Star Vijay. These stations broadcast in the Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi and Tamil languages respectively.
Star Utsav is a free station based in Mumbai that airs serials originally broadcast on pay channels. DD Chandana and DD Malayalam are general entertainment channels both run by Doordharshan, India's government-owned media conglomerate. 5aab TV is carried in the United States under the name Kary TV, and the Tamil Star Vijay has a U.S. outlet as well. Because languages in India vary by region, each state in the nation maintains a number of both private and government-run channels in that region's dominant language.
