The Somaliland Space Channel is the oldest television station in Somaliland, having been established in 1966. It is privately owned and airs only for seven hours a day, between 5 p.m. and midnight East Africa Time. The station focuses mainly on broadcasting local events happening in the region of Somaliland. It also airs dramas from the Middle East as well as English and Arabic films. The station also occasionally airs humanitarian awareness programs created by local and international aid groups.
The government of Somaliland owns Somaliland National TV, which is the dominant station in Somaliland. It was created in 2005 and airs only for six hours in a day, between 6 p.m. and midnight East Africa Time. It mainly focuses on Somali news and broadcasts in the Somali language. It also occasionally airs sports as well as local and international entertainment programs.
Horn Cable Television is Somaliland’s largest privately owned station. Its owner is Farhan Hajj Ali, a Hargeisa-based entrepreneur. It broadcasts in the Somali language 24 hours a day and has studios in both Hargeisa and London. It broadcasts a wide variety of programs ranging from local Somaliland news to political talk shows, music, dramas and Islamic programs.
