Some of the top-rated telenovelas include "La Reina del Sur," "Marimar," "La Usurpadora," "Yo Soy Betty La Fea" and "El Clon." As of March 2015, the top-rated telenovela on Univision is "La Fea mas Bella."
Many of the top telenovelas feature a poor or disadvantaged lead character who becomes involved with a rich counterpart. "Marimar," which regularly appears on top-10 telenovela lists, follows a poor girl who falls in love with the son of a rich and powerful family. The Colombian telenovela "Yo Soy Betty La Fea" tells the story of an ugly girl who lands a job at a high-fashion company; it was famously remade as the American television show "Ugly Betty." "La Usurpadora" features twins separated at birth—one rich and one poor.
Other top telenovelas deal with drug trafficking and drug lords. "La Reina del Sur," which is set in Mexico, features a young woman who ascends through the ranks of the drug world to become the most powerful trafficker in the country. The highly rated "El Clon" deals with drug addiction and rehab, as well as cloning and cultural differences.
Many of the top-rated telenovelas were produced and shown by television networks Telemundo and Univision. Most appeared in Spanish, and have been dubbed into other languages.
