Cornwell published the series' first book, "Postmortem," in 1990. The protagonist is medical examiner Kay Scarpetta. Scarpetta uses technology and forensic research to find a serial killer. Recurring characters in the series include Lucy Farinelli, Pete Marino and Benton Wesley. "Depraved Heart" is the 23rd novel in the series. In the novel, Scarpetta receives a disturbing video of security footage that may help to send her own niece to prison for life.
The character of Kay Scarpetta is a blond, sharp dressing professional woman of Italian descent. Initially, she works in Richmond, Virginia. She relocates to Florida to become a private forensic consultant then returns to Virginia. Towards the end of the series, she is working in the Northeast United States.
In addition to the “Kay Scarpetta” series, Cornwell also authored the “Andy Brazil” and “Win Garano” series.
