Thomas the Tank Engine is a fictional steam locomotive who is the most popular character in the children's television series, Thomas the Tank Engine, and its spin-off, Thomas and Friends. Thomas is painted blue with red trim and bears the running number of one.
The television program is based on a series of books written by the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry. The show debuted in England in 1984 under the title of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. In 1989, the program first aired in America on the Public Broadcasting Network. DVDs are available as well as the option to watch the show online through Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and YouTube. In addition to the broadcasts, fans can interact with the characters through travelling children's exhibits and at the Thomas Land theme park at Edaville USA in Carver, Massachusetts.
