Theresa Caputo is best known for playing herself on "Long Island Medium," which has aired on TLC since Sept. 25, 2011. A variety of sources have challenged Caputo's psychic claims, and accusations of fraud have remained consistent over the course of her show.
Theresa Caputo was born June 10, 1966, in Hicksville, New York, where she was also raised. Caputo claims that she discovered her psychic powers at a young age, being able to sense people's Spirits since the age of four. She also states that she began to communicate with souls in Heaven in her 20s, and that her powers have helped her overcome anxiety. Caputo married Nicholas Caputo in 1990, and they have two children as of Dec. 1, 2015.
Individuals have disputed the veracity of Caputo's claims since the premiere of "Long Island Medium." In 2012, Inside Edition published a story which questioned Caputo's ability to communicate with the dead. Similarly, in an article in Wired Magazine, fellow psychic James Randi described Caputo's process as cold reading, which involves making vague, common claims about her subjects, with selective editing used on her show to eliminate the guesses that are incorrect. In 2014, investigator Ron Tebo accused Caputo of fraud. He claimed that Caputo hires people to interview her subjects in advance so she can make accurate predictions.
