The telenovela “Quinceanera” returns to television in 2017. The Philippine-based GMA Network plans to produce a remake of the telenovela, starring Bea Binene and Barbie Forteza in the lead roles of Maricruz and Beatriz. Previous remakes include “Primer amor…a mil per hora” in 2000 and “Miss XV” in 2012.
Carla Estrada produced the original version of “Quinceanera” for the Mexican multimedia company Grupo Televisa S.A. It aired over 95 episodes in the United States on the Univision network from October 1987 to February 1988. The plot focuses on the lives of two 14-year-old Mexican girls preparing for their quinceaneras and the life-changing events that befall them as they approach womanhood. The series starred Adela Noriega, Ernesto Laguardia, Sebastián Ligarde and Latin singing sensation Thalia.
“Quinceanera” was the first telenovela made for young adults and the first to touch upon such sensitive issues as date rape, teen pregnancy and substance abuse. The series won several major awards at the 1988 TVyNovela Awards, including Best Telenovela. The Associated Press named it as one of the most influential telenovelas to ever air in Latin America. People en Espanol ranked “Quineanera” seventh on its 2010 list of the 20 best telenovelas, and Terra Networks included it on its 2012 list of the all-time best telenovelas.
