Tamil movies are movies made in the Tamil language. A part of Indian cinema, the Tamil movie industry is sometimes referred to as Kollywood because it is largely based in Kodambakkam, a district in Chennai.
Popular Tamil films are dubbed into other Indian languages, such as Telugu, for screening elsewhere in India or remade in other Indian languages. Tamil cinema released more than 200 films in 2015, a number that exceeds films in the Hindi language. Among the year's commercial and critical hits were the movies "Baahubali," "Kaaka Muttai" and "Thani Oruvan." Because of the Tamil diaspora, Tamil movies have a lucrative overseas markets and are distributed in North America, the Middle East and many parts of Asia with large ethnic Tamil populations, such as Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.
